Morphodynamic Controls for Growth and Evolution of a Rubble Coral Island

چکیده

Rubble islands are dynamic sedimentary features present on reef platforms that evolve under a variety of morphodynamic processes and controlling mechanisms. They provide valuable inhabitable land for small island nations, critical habitat numerous species, threatened by climate change. Aiming to investigate the mechanisms dictating evolution One Tree Island (OTI), rubble in Southern Great Barrier Reef, we combined different remotely-sensed data across varying timescales with wave extracted from satellite altimetry cyclone activity. Our findings show (1) OTI had expanded 7% between 1978 2019, (2) significant gross planform decadal adjustments were governed amount, intensity, proximity, relative position cyclones as well El Niño Oscillation (ENSO) phases, (3) growth involve spits delivering redistributing through alongshore sediment transport overtopping. Frequent short-term monitoring further research coupling variations factors driving change (i.e., availability, reef-wave interactions, extreme events) needed shed light future trajectory other scenario.

Growth Rate of Acropora formosa Fragments that Transplanted on Artificial Substrate Made from Coral Rubble

Coral reefs play an important physiological and ecological role in coastal ecosystems such as providing natural breakwaters that protect shorelines and human settlements from waves and storm. Corals killed by tsunami, waves and storms are often degraded into rubble. This rubble is dynamic, easily shifted by currents and storms, which effectively forms ‘‘killing fields’’ for coral juveniles, hin...

Short Term Growth Rate of Acropora downingi in the Coral Reef of Hengam Island, the Persian Gulf

In the Persian Gulf, Acropora- dominated coral reefs have been damaged by global and local disturbances. Inversion of coral colonies mostly occur due to anchoring and fishing in many coral reefs, particularly those established nearby human societies, like the coral reef of Hengam Island, in the Persian Gulf. The short term growth rates (weight increment) of inversely and normally transplanted c...

Environmental controls on growth of the massive coral Porites.

Annual density banding provided growth characteristics for 245 similar-sized, massive colonies of Porites from similar locations on 29 reefs from across the length and breadth of the Great Barrier Reef (GBR), Australia. Values obtained were density, extension rate, and calcification rate. Tissue thickness, the depth to which skeletons were occupied by tissue at the time of collection, was also ...

A standard unit for monitoring recruitment of fishes to coral reef rubble

We developed a benthic standard monitoring unit for recruitment of fishes (SMURF) to sample fishes that settle in coral rubble and tested it on three fringing reefs on the west coast of Barbados, West Indies. These rubble SMURFs are inexpensive to construct and permit newly settled fishes, including cryptic, secretive and small species, to be quickly and fairly completely (>83%) removed by dive...
